St. Stephen Film (working title)

This is the documentary I'm directing that is currently in production. It follows Issac Bailey, a journalist, professor, and lifelong stutterer from rural South Carolina, through his family's history in the deep South, where race, disability, incarceration, and inherited silence all run together. These behind the scenes images were captured during our filming in St. Stephen, South Carolina.

Role

Co-director. On this page: behind-the-scenes visual work, and co-creator of the postcard series built from our St. Stephen production stills and Issac's own words.

The Film

St. Stephen Film (working title), a feature documentary directed by Tessa Andrade, Maya Chupkov and Christina Chin, told through the eyes and voice of Issac Bailey.

Status

In active production, with the next phase of filming in the Carolinas.

The Postcards

The postcards came out of that shoot, the same way the gallery did. The photos and the feeling that came along with them felt too impactful for Instagram alone.

I love sending postcards to family and friends from my travels. To me they're one of the best ways to hold onto a place you've been. So I made them the way I'd want to receive one: one side is an image from St. Stephen, the other is something Issac said while we were filming.

His words are typed exactly as he spoke them, stutters and all. Because how he says it is part of what he's saying.

We handed them out at the fundraiser and used them as assets while networking.
